Borderlands 4 $80 Price Not a Problem for 'Real Fans' Says CEO

As the release date for Borderlands 4 approaches, fans are buzzing with anticipation. However, a key piece of information that remains undisclosed is the game's price, sparking concerns among the community about a potential $80 price tag. In a recent Twitter (X) post dated May 14, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford addressed a fan's concern about the high cost, stating that the pricing decision is not within his control and that true fans will find a way to purchase the game.

This statement has stirred significant backlash among fans, who have expressed their frustration in the comments section. Many felt that Pitchford's response was dismissive and out of touch, with some users highlighting the additional costs associated with season passes and skins, suggesting that the base price could easily escalate further.

During a PAX East panel on May 10, Pitchford elaborated on the rising costs of game development, mentioning that Borderlands 4's budget is more than double that of Borderlands 3. He acknowledged the increasing expenses and the complexities of pricing but remained non-committal about the final price, leaving fans uneasy about the perceived value versus cost.

The implication that only "real fans" would pay the high price has left many feeling alienated and reconsidering their purchase decision. This sentiment is particularly strong given the current economic climate and the ongoing trend of rising game prices across the industry.

In contrast, Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Gearbox, has approached the pricing discussion with more caution. In an interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick emphasized the company's commitment to providing exceptional value. He argued that video games offer unparalleled entertainment value compared to other forms of media like movies, live events, and streaming services.

Zelnick further stated, "It's our job to deliver much more value than what we charge. That's our goal. We think consumers are willing to pay for the very best. It's our job to make the very best." This approach reflects Take-Two's strategy of game-by-game pricing, as evidenced by the $50 price tag announced for their upcoming title, Mafia: The Old Country, and the speculation around GTA VI possibly exceeding $100.

In another interview with GamesIndustry.biz on May 16, Zelnick reiterated Take-Two's philosophy of variable pricing, emphasizing their commitment to delivering exceptional value to consumers worldwide.

Recent developments in the Borderlands series, including review bombing due to EULA changes, have added to the community's concerns. With the pricing issue now at the forefront, Gearbox may need to pay closer attention to fan feedback to maintain goodwill and ensure a successful launch.

Borderlands 4 is slated for release on September 12, 2025, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. For the latest updates and information on the game, be sure to check out our dedicated article.
