The Digital Revolution of Devarattam
Under the banner of my project, "Digital Revolution of Devarattam," I am thrilled to introduce a groundbreaking app that celebrates the vibrant folk dance of Tamil Nadu known as Devarattam. This initiative is not only a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region but also a tribute to the legends who have kept this art form alive.
The app is dedicated to the esteemed recipients of prestigious awards: Mr. M. Kumararaman, a retired teacher honored with the Kalaimamani award; Mr. M. Kannan Kumar, also a Kalaimani awardee; and Mr. K. Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti, who received the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar. Their contributions to Devarattam have been monumental, and it is with great respect that I dedicate this app to these legends, my guru Mr. E. Rajakamulu, and other beloved figures in the Devarattam community.
The primary goal of the Devarattam app is to spread awareness and appreciation of this traditional dance form, focusing on both the dance itself and its distinguished practitioners. Devarattam, performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar, both in ancient times and today, is characterized by its intricate steps. The dance consists of 32 to 72 steps, with the initial 32 forming the foundational moves, while the others serve as variations.
In the performance of Devarattam, dancers skillfully hold a kerchief in each hand and wear Salangai on each leg. They dance to the rhythmic beats of the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional musical instrument, bringing the dance to life with energy and grace.
By digitizing Devarattam, this app aims to preserve and promote this cherished cultural treasure, ensuring it reaches audiences far and wide, celebrating the art and its legends in a modern, accessible format.
