About Mudras:
Mudra is a Sanskrit term meaning posture or pose. In the word Mudra, “mud” signifies joy and “ra” means to produce—thus it generates joy and cheerfulness. Mudras originated in Hinduism and Buddhism. Over 200 Mudras are used in Bharatanatyam, 250 in Mohiniattam, and 108 in Tantric rituals. Mudras are a silent language of self‑expression, consisting of hand gestures and finger postures.
Mudras engage the entire body like a closed electrical circuit, channeling energy throughout. The physical body is composed of five elements: the thumb, index, middle, ring, and little fingers respectively represent Fire, Air, Sky, Earth, and Water. An imbalance among these elements weakens the immune system and can lead to illness. By touching a finger to the thumb, the corresponding element is rebalanced, helping to alleviate the related condition.
Daily practice typically requires 5 to 45 minutes, using the appropriate Mudra with proper pressure, touch, sitting posture, and breathing.
The effectiveness of Mudras depends not only on practice but also on one’s diet, eating habits, and overall lifestyle.
