The Holy Spirit is a Person, not just a force. From the very first page of the Bible, before creation began, we see the Spirit of God hovering over the earth’s dark, formless waters, ready to unleash goodness and bring forth life. Throughout Scripture, when the Spirit of God is described—as in the opening verses—the Hebrew word "ruakh" is used. Ruakh speaks of an invisible, mighty energy essential for life, making "Spirit" the perfect name for God’s own Spirit.

Though the religious leaders of the day saw Jesus as a threat and had Him killed, God’s Spirit was still at work. After Jesus rose from the grave, His disciples proclaimed He was radiant with the Spirit of God.

When Jesus appeared to His closest followers, He breathed the Holy Spirit into them, empowering them also to spread God’s goodness across the world. Today, through Christ and the power He gives His people, God’s Spirit continues to hover over a dark and chaotic world, steadily healing it and moving toward the day when all creation is restored to its original glory.

The Holy Spirit is a wonderful Person—Friend, Guide, Counselor, and Teacher. He was present with God the Father and Jesus at Creation, and it was by His power that the Father’s commands were fulfilled. God said, “Let there be light,” and the Holy Spirit brought light and all creation into being.

We as Christians need to learn about the Holy Spirit and allow Him to move powerfully in our lives. He will bring us a joy we’ve never known. The Holy Spirit lives within us; when we come to Him and ask, He will teach us about God, Jesus, and Himself. The Holy Spirit has a personality and will never force himself upon us. But as we open our hearts to him, he instructs us so we can know God and his will for our lives. We learn god’s will by reading his Word, the Bible.

When faced with a listless spirit, one powerful remedy is to pray to the Holy Spirit. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, “Prayer is the action of God and of man, springing forth from both the Holy Spirit and ourselves, wholly directed to the Father, in union with the human will of the Son of god made man” (CCC 2564).
