Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of GTA parent company Take-Two Interactive, discussed his perspective on managing the company's intellectual property during its Q2 2025 investor call.

When asked about consumer behavior and reactions to new projects, Zelnick recognized that the company is best known for its established franchises, like those from Rockstar Games—the GTA and Red Dead Redemption series. He also shared his vision of a future where these legacy IPs may not hold the same value for the company or players as they have over the past two decades.

According to a transcript by PCGamer, Zelnick commented on the possibility of more sequels for GTA and RDR, stating, "While sequels are a lower-risk move than creating new intellectual property, everything eventually declines. Even though most of our franchise sequels have outperformed their predecessors—which is not the industry norm—the nature of decay and entropy still applies. It’s a reality in physics, human existence, and all things on Earth."

He further expressed that if the company doesn't innovate and develop new IP, it risks "burning the furniture to heat the house." He explained, "Ultimately, everything fades—even hit titles. If we don’t explore new ideas and build new intellectual property, saying we're resting on our laurels would be an understatement. We're courting failure by relying solely on the past."

Regarding the release of legacy franchises, Zelnick told Variety in an interview that major game launches will be spaced out. "It's safe to assume we wouldn't—and no one would—unnecessarily schedule major releases too close together," he said. Take-Two has not yet specified GTA 6's exact launch date within the Fall 2025 window, but Zelnick emphasized it won't coincide with Borderlands 4, which is scheduled for a Spring 2025/2026 release (between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026).

According to creator Ken Levine, Judas will let players shape the story and character relationships through their choices.
