"Spookmane" Ghost Horse Ignites Oblivion Community Hunt

Author : Hunter May 21,2026

While The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has its share of eerie encounters—from skeletons and spirits to zombies—the recent discovery of a 'ghost horse' has veteran players baffled. No one remembers spotting this spectral steed in the original 2006 release or the 2025 remaster.

The mystery started with a Reddit post from user TaricIsNotASupport, who pointed out what appears to be a phantom horse simply waiting to be found.

Uhhhh, guys, is this new?

“I was creating silly spells in Frostcrag Spire, which is one of my favorite ways to enjoy the game,” TaricIsNotASupport explained. “But this time, when I left the Cosy Chaos Spire—a divisive topic in the community—I spotted something incredibly strange in the distance.”

“Naturally, I rushed over there like a madman. To my surprise, I found this nameless spectral horse.

“I’ve logged thousands of hours in the original Oblivion and already poured over a hundred into the Remaster, yet this is the first time I’ve ever seen this creature.

“I can’t tell if it’s a new addition or something I simply missed all these years.”

TaricIsNotASupport asked the community for help solving the puzzle, sparking an online ghost hunt. Players scoured the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages for any mention of a spectral mount in the original game, but so far, they’ve found nothing.

To the people asking if I can ride or interact with the spooky horse, yes! 1/2

Could it be a mod? TaricIsNotASupport clarified they’re playing on PlayStation 5, where mods aren’t available. They also shared a clip of their character riding the horse. Despite its ghostly appearance, the mount behaves like any regular horse in Oblivion. “It fast travels and can even be stabled!” TaricIsNotASupport said. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s now my faithful steed!”

Some speculate the ghost horse is a glitch, possibly caused by a spell misfiring. Bethesda games are notorious for bugs (one currently breaks the camera after extended play), and this might be another addition to the list.

“This is very strange,” commented user ClaymoreBeatz. “The wiki only lists two unique horses: Shadowmere and unicorns. I can’t find any mods that create this effect, so I doubt you’re lying about not using a PC. It’s likely a glitch specific to the Remaster or a corrupted magical effect. Maybe an Armored Horse was hit by a spell, causing its name and visual effect to bug out.”

I was asked if Spookmane* can be buffed and if it stays spectral; the answer is yes!

Others wonder if Bethesda and Virtuos secretly added the ghost horse as a creepy Easter egg for players to discover. While less likely, it’s an entertaining idea—if true, what other secrets might be hidden in the remaster?

Many players are eager to figure out how to replicate the steed and claim a ghost horse of their own. So far, no specific method has been identified, and TaricIsNotASupport hasn’t pinpointed what triggered its appearance.

Lacking an official in-game name, TaricIsNotASupport has dubbed their ghostly companion ‘Spookmane’—a fitting title. They’ve vowed to continue their adventures with Spookmane at their side. Whether it’s a one-off anomaly, a hidden secret, or a simple bug, Spookmane has captivated the attention—and perhaps the hearts—of the Oblivion community.

“This creature might be my favorite new friend,” TaricIsNotASupport said. “Spookmane, you’re glorious, and I love you.”

Developed by remake specialists Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion Remastered boasts a long list of visual and gameplay improvements. It runs at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, as expected, but the updates go deeper. Everything from the leveling systems and character creation to combat animations and menus has been refined. New dialogue, a proper third-person view, and advanced lip-sync technology are also included. These changes have been well-received by fans, some of whom argue the project feels more like a full remake. Bethesda, however, has clarified its reasons for choosing the remaster path.

Now that the game is out, Oblivion Remastered players are advising newcomers to tackle Kvatch early before level scaling turns it into a nightmare. There’s also a report about a player who escaped Cyrodiil’s borders to explore Valenwood, Skyrim, and even Hammerfell—the rumored setting for The Elder Scrolls VI.
