Mastering Hyper Light Breaker's Targeting System: Lock-On vs. Free Cam

Hyper Light Breaker's lock-on mechanic, while crucial, isn't always the best approach. This guide clarifies its use and when to prioritize the default free camera. Many game mechanics remain unintuitive, adding to the game's mystique. Understanding the targeting system is key to effective gameplay.

How to Target Enemies

To lock onto an enemy, center your view on them and press the right analog stick (R3). The game automatically selects the closest target, unless it's surrounded by others. A reticle will appear, and the camera zooms slightly.

Line of sight isn't required; the enemy just needs to be visible and within range. Locking on alters character movement, centering the target. This can be disorienting with fast-moving enemies, potentially altering your directional inputs as the camera adjusts.

To switch targets, use the right analog stick horizontally. It will select the nearest enemy in range. Pressing R3 again cancels the lock-on, returning to the free camera. The lock-on also automatically disengages if you move too far from the target. These controls are customizable in the settings menu.

Lock-On vs. Free Cam: When to Use Which

Lock-on excels in one-on-one encounters, particularly bosses or strong (yellow health bar) enemies, after eliminating other mobs. The focused camera leaves you vulnerable to attacks from unseen enemies.

Free cam is generally superior. Against multiple or easily dispatched enemies, lock-on hinders your situational awareness.

Against mini-bosses or bosses, clear surrounding enemies first, then lock-on for focused attacks. If more enemies appear, disengage the lock-on and resume once they're eliminated.

Extractions, for instance, involve waves of regular enemies followed by a mini-boss. Maintain free cam until clearing the initial waves, then lock onto the mini-boss for a focused assault.
