Atari Reinvents Classic Breakout Game

Author : Victoria Oct 14,2025

The iconic 1976 game Breakout receives a modern reinterpretation nearly five decades later. Breakout Beyond reinvents Atari's classic brick-breaker formula with sideways-scrolling gameplay while maintaining the fundamental paddle-and-ball mechanics.

Developed by Choice Provisions (creators of the BIT.TRIP series), Breakout Beyond introduces lateral progression where players advance from left to right. Core gameplay still revolves around brick-breaking, with visual effects and lights intensifying as combos build.

The game features special bricks that trigger spectacular effects including massive explosions and even laser cannons. With 72 planned levels plus an endless mode featuring global online leaderboards, Breakout Beyond also offers local two-player cooperative gameplay.

Originally announced as an Intellivision Amico exclusive in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development was subsequently acquired by Atari.

"We're excited to introduce this innovative version of Breakout to players," commented Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing. "The development team brilliantly maintained Breakout's essence while delivering fresh gameplay dynamics. Breakout Beyond honors the franchise's legacy while introducing new combo possibilities."

The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with an anticipated 2020 launch, remains unreleased following multiple setbacks and development delays. Atari acquired Intellivision's intellectual property rights last year, though notably excluded the Amico console itself.

Breakout Beyond arrives later this year across PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Atari VCS platforms.
