Ecco The Dolphin Returns

As reported by Gematsu, Sega filed trademarks for "Ecco" and "Ecco the Dolphin" on December 27th, 2024, reigniting interest in a series that has been silent for 24 years. This news, made public today, has set the gaming community abuzz with anticipation.

Originally launched in 1992 by the Hungarian game development studio Appaloosa Interactive (formerly known as Novotrade International) and published by Sega, Ecco the Dolphin introduced players to the adventures of Ecco, a bottlenose dolphin on a mission to thwart extraterrestrial threats to Earth. The series saw four subsequent releases until the year 2000. Plans for a follow-up to the 2000 game, Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, titled Ecco II: Sentinels of the Universe, were abandoned following the decline and eventual discontinuation of the Sega Dreamcast.

Today, Sega stands as a prominent game developer and publisher, while Appaloosa Interactive ceased operations in the mid-2000s. However, the spirit of Ecco lives on through its creators, such as Ed Annunziata, who remains active in the industry. Annunziata, the creator of Ecco the Dolphin, released Space War Arena in 2019 and expressed his ongoing hope for an Ecco sequel in a 2019 interview with NintendoLife, stating, "One thing I can say is in the future, people are playing this game. I never give up!"

As of now, no further details have emerged regarding the future of Ecco the Dolphin. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for more updates. With Sega's recent focus on reviving classic franchises and developing new IPs, including Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Shinobi, Virtua Fighter, Project Century, and a new "RPG-like" Virtua Fighter, Ecco the Dolphin could soon join this exciting lineup.
