Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will launch as a physical Nintendo Switch title featuring the complete base game on a 64GB cartridge.
Switch 2 Game-Key Cards are physical products containing download codes rather than game data. While clearly labeled on packaging, this approach has concerned some players who value physical game ownership over digital licenses.
For Sonic fans, this announcement resolves previous uncertainty surrounding CrossWorlds' physical release. Sega's newly published FAQ definitively states: "The physical edition includes the full base game on a 64GB game card."
The FAQ also confirms crossplay support between Switch versions, progress transfer from Switch to Switch 2, and a $10 upgrade option for players transitioning to the newer console.
This contrasts with Square Enix's recent confirmation that Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake won't support save transfers or upgrades between Switch generations - a decision that drew criticism from fans.
CrossWorlds boasts an extensive roster including core Sonic characters (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles) alongside surprising crossovers like SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar characters, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The game enters direct competition with Switch 2 exclusive Mario Kart World, which maintains a Nintendo-only character policy. Launching simultaneously on Switch and Switch 2 this September, CrossWorlds reignites the classic Mario vs. Sonic racing rivalry.
IGN's recent hands-on preview praised the experience: "It captures that perfect racing vibe - fast, fluid, and immensely enjoyable to master."
