Back in early April, Nintendo Switch 2 enthusiasts caught a glimpse of what they hoped might be true—mentions of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support appeared briefly on official product pages before being quietly removed. The fleeting reference sparked speculation and excitement, especially among those anticipating enhanced visual performance on the new hybrid console. Now, Nintendo has officially clarified its stance on VRR implementation for the Switch 2.
According to an official statement provided to NintendoLife, the information originally published regarding VRR was inaccurate. The company confirmed that "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only." Additionally, Nintendo acknowledged the error in allowing incorrect details to appear on their website and issued an apology: "The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologise for the error."
When asked about potential future firmware updates enabling VRR for docked mode, Nintendo remained tight-lipped, stating they have "nothing to announce on this topic." This means that at launch, VRR functionality is limited strictly to handheld play, leaving users who prefer playing on the TV without access to this feature—at least for now.
A Temporary Setback or Just Delayed?
This revelation comes after a wave of confusion when the original VRR mentions were first spotted and then quickly taken down. Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie documented how references to VRR support vanished across multiple regional websites over time, adding to the intrigue surrounding the Switch 2’s technical capabilities.
While it's disappointing for those hoping for full VRR compatibility at launch, history suggests all may not be lost. Sony successfully rolled out VRR support for the PS5 via a system update post-launch, proving that such features can be added retroactively. There's still room for Nintendo to surprise us with future enhancements.
More Good News for Switch 2 Owners
In other news, Nintendo recently released a list of titles receiving free performance upgrades on the Switch 2 platform. Notable entries include *Pokémon Scarlet & Violet*, *Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury*, and several others, signaling Nintendo’s commitment to improving gameplay experiences on the new hardware.
Adding to the positive momentum, Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser assured fans that supply chain concerns are under control, promising sufficient stock to meet consumer demand "through the holidays."
