Insider: MultiVersus is on the verge of shutting down: Warner Bros. fighting game lost 99% of its players

The future of MultiVersus hangs in the balance. Season 5, launching in early February, could be its last stand, according to industry insider AusilMV. Their source suggests the season is a final attempt to revive the game's flagging popularity. While currently just a rumor, the situation is undeniably precarious.

The game's initial launch in 2022 saw meteoric success, peaking at 153,000 concurrent Steam players. However, a dramatic 99% player drop followed swiftly, leading Warner Bros. Games to shut down the project in June 2023, controversially labeling it an "open beta test." A relaunch with updates occurred in May 2024, but failed to recapture its initial audience.

This effectively makes the current iteration a relaunch, disguised as a continuation after the June 2023 shutdown. The initial 2022 release, despite its initial popularity, was abruptly halted, leaving many players, particularly those who purchased the premium edition, feeling disillusioned. Season 5 represents a make-or-break moment for the developers. Its performance will likely determine the game's ultimate fate.
