Microsoft has announced workforce reductions affecting 3% of its global employees.

According to CNBC's report, Microsoft employed 228,000 workers as of June 2024 and plans to streamline management structures across all divisions. The restructuring impacts roughly 6,000 employees.

"We're making ongoing organizational adjustments to optimize the company's position in an evolving market," a Microsoft representative told CNBC.

IGN has reached out to Microsoft regarding potential impacts on its gaming division.

This follows Microsoft's September 2024 gaming sector layoffs of 650 staff, compounding earlier cuts affecting 1,900 employees that same year. Those reductions included closures of Tango Gameworks (Hi-Fi Rush) and Arkane Austin (Redfall). Since acquiring Activision Blizzard for $69 billion in 2023, Microsoft has eliminated 2,550 gaming-related positions.

In a June 2024 interview with IGN, Xbox head Phil Spencer explained: "Running a sustainable, growing business requires making difficult choices - decisions I don't enjoy but that leadership must address."
