Honor of Kings Unveils Major Esports Plans for 2025

Following its successful global launch, Honor of Kings is making waves in the esports world. 2024 has been a landmark year, and 2025 promises even more exciting developments. Key announcements include the inaugural Honor of Kings invitational tournament in the Philippines (February 21st - March 1st) and, most significantly, the global adoption of a ban & pick format for Season Three and all future tournaments.

What is Ban & Pick?

The ban & pick system is simpler than it sounds. Once a hero is selected by a team in a match, that hero is ineligible for use by that same team for the remainder of the tournament. This means a player's hero choice directly impacts their team's strategic options, but not their opponents'.

This adds a significant layer of complexity. Many MOBA players specialize in a limited roster of mastered characters. The system forces teams to consider both individual player expertise and overall team synergy when selecting heroes. Will a player choose a character they're proficient with, even if a teammate excels with that same hero? Or will they prioritize team composition over individual preferences?

A Strategic Shift

The popularity of ban & pick in MOBAs is undeniable. While not a novel concept (games like League of Legends and Rainbow Six Siege utilize similar mechanics), Honor of Kings' implementation uniquely places the selection burden on individual players, fostering greater team coordination and strategic depth. This innovative approach is sure to heighten the excitement and engagement for both players and spectators.
