HBO Game Series Abandons Video Game Tropes in 'Last of Us'

The HBO adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 will portray Abby differently than her video game counterpart. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explained that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need the same physical build as the game's Abby because the show prioritizes drama over moment-to-moment violent action. The show's Abby will be "physically more vulnerable," but her strength of spirit will be emphasized, as showrunner Craig Mazin noted.

Druckmann highlighted the difference in approach between the game and the show: the game required players to embody both Ellie and Abby, necessitating distinct mechanical differences in their gameplay. Abby's brute strength in the game was less crucial for the show's narrative.

The show plans to adapt The Last of Us Part 2 across multiple seasons, unlike Season 1's adaptation of the first game. Season 2, comprising seven episodes, will conclude with a "natural breakpoint," leaving room for future seasons.

The controversial nature of Abby's character in the game has not been overlooked. The production team acknowledged the online harassment faced by Druckmann and Laura Bailey (Abby's voice actress), including threats against Bailey's family. Consequently, Dever received additional security during filming. Isabel Merced, who plays Dina, emphasized that Abby is a fictional character, urging viewers to remember this.
