Assassin’s Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) offers an extensive look at player progression, highlighted by the ability to transmog weapons. This feature allows players to alter their weapon's appearance while maintaining its original stats, catering to both functionality and personal style. On March 1, 2025, AC Shadows detailed this system on their website, with Associate Game Director Julien explaining the team's vision for customization.
The transmog feature becomes available after players build a Forge in the Hideout, accessible through the inventory menu. Julien noted, "The Forge is central to inventory management, where players can upgrade or dismantle their gear. We'll explore more about the Hideout in a future article." Players can mix elements from different weapons, such as combining a blade from one weapon with the guard of another and the handle of a third, creating a personalized look.
New Progression Loop
During IGN Fan Fest 2025, AC Shadows’ Creative Director Charles Benoit discussed the game's combat mechanics and progression. Ubisoft's recent post further elaborates on these mechanics, focusing on the unique approach to player progression with two protagonists.
Julien emphasized the challenge of integrating two distinct characters into the game's feudal Japan setting, stating, "Having two separate characters with unique archetypes inspired us to rethink player progression, aiming to align closely with the philosophy of mastery and martial arts."
Mastery, Abilities, and Knowledge Ranks
AC Shadows features specialized mastery trees for its protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke, tailored to their roles as a shinobi and a samurai, respectively. Julien explained, "Our mastery trees allow players to focus on mastering specific weapons, playstyles, or archetypes, with invested points unlocking additional bonuses."
Abilities within these trees enhance gameplay and increase damage output, but accessing higher-tier abilities requires reaching certain Knowledge Ranks. These ranks can be improved through non-violent activities like finding Lost Pages, praying at Shrines, practicing Kuji-kiri Meditation for Naoe, or learning new Kata for Yasuke.
Customizing Your Playstyle
AC Shadows enables players to tailor their gameplay experience through various customization options. Perks allow for equipment modification, enhancing stats, influencing afflictions, or creating conditions that encourage varied playstyles.
Despite their initial archetypes, Naoe and Yasuke offer flexible playstyles.
