"Iroha Karuta" is based on the Iroha song, a historical poem that incorporates the 47 unique hiragana characters of its time—the version known as "Kyo-gire" uses 48 characters. Phrases from the poem serve as the starting text on the karuta cards. It originated in Kyoto during the mid-Edo period and later spread to Osaka, Nagoya, and Edo. Our quiz deals with phrases from the Tokyo variant.
