Talempong Pacik and Tambua Tansa: Cultural Arts of Minang

Numerous traditional arts remain vibrant today, including tambua tansa, the plate dance (piriang), the daring plate dance on broken glass, randai theater, saluang flute music, talempong gong ensembles, rice stalk pupuik wind instruments, and the art of martial movements (pencak silat).

Tambua Tansa, in particular, is deeply connected to community celebrations. It is a common feature at official government ceremonies, where its presence energizes the event.

While Tambua Tansa is practiced across the nagari (villages) of Agam Regency, it is most prominent and rapidly developed in the Lake Maninjau basin area and Lubuk Basung District.

The Tansa is a small drum, struck with two special rattan sticks. It acts as the command instrument for the Tambua ensemble. The dancer, who is also the group's leader, uses it to signal the song or rhythm to be played.

The Tambua itself is a drum crafted from specific hollowed-out wood. Sizes vary significantly. The large type, called Tambadang Gadang, has a diameter of about 50 to 60 cm. The smaller version, known as Tambua Kaciak, measures 25 to 30 cm. A typical performance group features between 6 to 12 tambua drums.

Tambua Tansa serves as a powerful tool for gathering people. It is traditionally played to call the community for gorongroyong, the collective work of building roads or other public facilities.

Typically, the group leader or a village elder will perform the tambua tansa at the worksite early in the morning. Its thunderous sound acts as a call, quickly summoning those obligated for communal work.

Even after work begins, Tambua Tansa continues, boosting the workers' morale with its energetic rhythms, often accompanied by the shrill sound of the rice-stalk pupuik and the cheerful shouts of the laborers. This spirited atmosphere helps workers forget their fatigue and the heat of the sun.

During wedding feasts, Tambua Tansa is essential for creating a lively and festive mood. The celebration would feel incomplete and dull without its powerful roar.

Tambua Tansa is also performed to welcome honored guests, such as during official visits to the nagari by a regent, deputy regent, police chief, governor, or district head.
