Chess is one of the world's oldest and most beloved board games, enjoyed by millions globally. The game is played on an 8x8 checkered board with 64 alternating light and dark squares. The board is positioned so each player has a light-colored square on their right-hand side.

Each player starts with 16 pieces: eight Pawns, two Knights, two Bishops, two Rooks, one Queen, and one King. The player with the white pieces moves first, with players taking turns to move one piece per play.

There are over 2000 known chess variants, including popular ones like Bughouse Chess, Chess960, 3-Check Chess, and Four-Player Chess.
