Squad Busters marks its first anniversary with the launch of Update 2.0 on May 13th – the game's most significant transformation since its 2024 debut. Despite initial struggles to gain traction compared to Supercell's other hits, this comprehensive reboot aims to revitalize the gameplay experience.
More Than Just Minor Adjustments
Version 2.0 represents a complete gameplay overhaul, fundamentally changing core mechanics from combat to victory conditions. The most notable shift comes through the new Hero system, where players now command a central character - elimination of this Hero means instant defeat.
Combat receives a dynamic upgrade with simultaneous movement and attacking capabilities, creating faster-paced, more intense matches. The victory conditions now focus solely on defeating the opposing Hero rather than complete team elimination, prompting some players to draw comparisons with Brawl Stars' gameplay style.
Streamlining the Experience
Update 2.0 removes several existing game modes including Doppelgangers, Double Trouble, and Epic Overload, along with certain cosmetic items and progression systems. Supercell will compensate players with Hero Points and other bonus items for affected content.
This extensive rework reflects Supercell's urgency to boost Squad Busters' popularity, which hasn't reached the same heights as Clash of Clans or Brawl Stars. The update coincides with the game's first anniversary celebration starting May 29th, featuring special piñata events with opportunities to unlock the new Mortis Hero.
