Sony's recent policy on PC gaming has stirred significant controversy among gamers. The company's insistence on requiring a PlayStation Network (PSN) account even for single-player games has been a major point of contention, especially since the service isn't available in all regions, leading to restricted sales of modern releases.
In response to the backlash, Sony has announced some adjustments to its policy. While the requirement for PSN tethering on PC games isn't completely eliminated, there will be notable relaxations. The following games will not mandate PSN tethering:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarok
- The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
For those who opt to link their PSN account, Sony is offering enticing incentives:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" line of costumes for both Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarok: Immediate access to the Armor of the Black Bear set from the first "Lost Things" chest at the game's start, along with a resource set.
- The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered: Bonus points to unlock various features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In a November investor meeting, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the opposition to the PSN connection requirement but emphasized its importance for maintaining security and order. He discussed these restrictions primarily in the context of service-based games, yet failed to clarify how single-player titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök benefit from a mandatory PSN account in terms of safety.
As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, Sony's policies will undoubtedly remain a focal point for discussion and potential further adjustments.
