Are you excited about Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? The acclaimed director behind Deadpool & Wolverine is still very much involved, and we've got an encouraging update from the project’s writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, hinting at the film's progress. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

Details about the movie remain scarce, but we do know it will take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has positioned the film in the Star Wars timeline, stating, "That’s also in the future... It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This makes it the first film to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era, a thrilling prospect for fans eager to see what happens next in the galaxy far, far away.

In the same discussion, Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's movie will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she noted. Additionally, there's buzz that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this eagerly anticipated project.

Tropper's optimistic words suggest that things are progressing well for Levy's film, though fans will have to wait until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027, to see it on the big screen.

Since the release of the divisive Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has been cautious with its Star Wars films. Several projects were cancelled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. A Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was also removed from Disney's calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in the Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently exiting after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with reports indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.

Disney's Star Wars pipeline is brimming with more than just these projects. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will pen a new trilogy, distinct from the Skywalker Saga, contrary to earlier rumors.

The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with an exciting triple premiere episode. Stay tuned for more updates on these and other thrilling developments in the Star Wars universe!
