"First Post-Rise of Skywalker Novel Explores New Star Wars Universe"

Author : Peyton May 19,2025

We’re finally getting a glimpse into the future of the Star Wars saga beyond The Rise of Skywalker—but not through Shawn Levy's lens. While the excitement for Levy's upcoming film, Star Wars: Starfighter, remains high, fans will soon delve deeper into the post-Rise of Skywalker universe through a new young adult novel titled Star Wars: The Last Order.

The novel, announced on Penguin Random House's website, promises an in-depth exploration of the beloved characters Finn, portrayed by John Boyega, and Jannah, portrayed by Naomi Ackie, whom we met in Rise of Skywalker. Penned by Kwame Mbalia, the official synopsis from the publisher teases an engaging plot:

"Following the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the Resistance rescues a ship full of young passengers who had been kidnapped by the First Order. As Finn and Jannah set out to find the First Order officer responsible before he can endanger any more children, the two former stormtroopers must wrestle with their own complicated pasts as soldiers of the oppressive regime."

PlayThis novel marks the first narrative project to explore the Star Wars universe post-*Rise of Skywalker*, even though it's not the first planned project to do so. As for Shawn Levy's contribution to the post-*Rise of Skywalker* timeline, it remains eagerly anticipated.

In a February interview with Deadline, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shed light on the upcoming timeline shift, stating, “It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out.” Last month, Jonathan Tropper, the writer attached to the project, expressed his enthusiasm to Screen Rant, saying, "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think." Shortly after, the release date for the film was revealed at Star Wars Celebration Japan, with Ryan Gosling confirmed to star.
