Following the releases of Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four #1 in March and Godzilla vs. Hulk #1 in April, Godzilla vs. Spider-Man #1 continues the nostalgic journey, setting its story post-1984's Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars. In this thrilling narrative, Peter Parker, fresh from Battleworld and adapting to his new symbiote costume, faces the colossal challenge of Godzilla threatening his city.
Penned by Joe Kelly, who is also set to relaunch The Amazing Spider-Man series, and illustrated by Nick Bradshaw of Wolverine and the X-Men fame, this issue promises a dynamic blend of action and nostalgia. The cover artists include Bradshaw, Lee Garbett, and Greg Land.
Joe Kelly shared his enthusiasm with IGN, stating, "The second I heard that there was going to be a Godzilla x Spidey crossover set in the ‘80s, I almost leapt across the table to claim it. This book is a chance to go nuts and have a blast with two iconic characters and channel the chaos of the time period that I was actively collecting Spider-Man. Nick Bradshaw really captures the absurdity of the concept and the vibe I was going for, while at the same time giving Godzilla and Spidey (in his perfectly-normal-nothing-weird-here-black suit!) the prestige and gravity they deserve. It's a love letter served with an earth-shattering roar!"
While this isn't the first time Godzilla has clashed with Western superheroes—DC's Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong and its upcoming sequel come to mind—Marvel's approach focuses on the classic Toho version of Godzilla, distinguishing it from the MonsterVerse iterations seen in DC's series.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of IDW's Godzilla vs. Los Angeles #1, an anthology special contributing its proceeds to wildfire relief efforts.
