Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has rolled out its much-anticipated final patch, marking the end of its legendary journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios unveiled BG3’s Patch 8, the game's last major update. This milestone has led to a significant increase in player numbers, pushing BG3 just outside Steam's top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, the game has now soared to over 169,000 players.
Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, shared his thoughts on Twitter (X) on April 22, celebrating the player surge following Patch 8's release. He highlighted the robust mod support as a key factor, allowing the studio to shift focus to their next project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will step away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to embark on a new venture.
In light of this, D&D's owner, Wizards of the Coast, along with Hasbro, will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise independently. They are currently negotiating with other studios about who might develop a potential Baldur’s Gate 4.
12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!
Patch 8, announced back in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been eagerly awaited by fans. This final update brings a wealth of new content, including 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, and cross-play functionality. Larian Studios provided a comprehensive list of patch notes on the BG3 website, which not only details the new features but also includes an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring a polished end to BG3's development.
Larian Studios has poured considerable effort into enhancing BG3, as seen in the numerous fixes and updates included in this final version. While this marks their last major patch, the studio remains committed to supporting the modding community.
