Nintendo has officially unveiled the pre-order date and pricing details for the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 console and its array of accessories. While the price of the console itself remains unchanged, the cost of accessories has seen a notable increase, which could potentially influence the purchasing decisions of early adopters.

The base model of the Nintendo Switch 2 will be available for $449.99, with the bundle including Mario Kart World priced at $499.99. Mario Kart World, a popular kart racing game, is priced at $79.99 as a standalone purchase, while Donkey Kong Bananza will set you back $69.99.

However, it's the accessory price hikes that have caught the attention of the gaming community. Here's a detailed breakdown of the new accessory prices:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller - $84.99
  • Joy-Con 2 Pair - $94.99
  • Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip - $39.99
  • Joy-Con 2 Strap - $13.99
  • Joy-Con 2 Wheel Set - $24.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Camera - $54.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Dock Set - $119.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector - $39.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case - $84.99
  • Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter - $34.99

In their official announcement, Nintendo explained that the "price adjustments" for Switch 2 accessories were due to "changes in market conditions" since the initial pricing was announced on April 2. Notable price increases include a $5 bump for high-demand items like the Joy-Con 2 Pair, the Switch 2 Pro Controller, and the camera, while the Switch 2 Dock Set saw a $10 increase, bringing its price to $119.99 from the previous $109.99.

The community has been vocal about their concerns regarding the new accessory prices, especially the near triple-digit cost of a Joy-Con 2 Pair. Prospective buyers are expressing surprise and hesitation at the expense.

Amidst the pricing discussions, it's worth noting that many accessories from the original Nintendo Switch will still be compatible with the Switch 2. As confirmed on Nintendo's support site, original Joy-Con controllers and the Nintendo Switch 1 Pro controller can be wirelessly paired with the Switch 2, though they cannot be directly attached. Other retro controllers, like those for the Super Nintendo and N64, will also remain compatible with the new system for supported games.

The conversation on social media has highlighted the compatibility of Switch 1 accessories and even the potential use of third-party controllers. While these alternatives may lack some features like the C-button or the ability to wake up the console, they could represent a cost-saving option for some Switch 2 buyers.

Nintendo has also cautioned that future price adjustments for any of their products are possible, depending on market conditions. This might provide some reassurance to those who find the current prices steep, especially knowing that existing Pro controllers can still be utilized with the new console.

Pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 will commence on April 24, 2025.
