Imperial: Jonathan Hickman

Imperial stands as one of Marvel's most ambitious comic projects for 2025. This groundbreaking series comes from Jonathan Hickman, the visionary behind transformative Marvel epics like House of X and the reinvented Ultimate Universe. Just as those projects reshaped their respective corners of Marvel, Imperial promises to redefine cosmic heroes like Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Exclusive First Look: Marvel's Imperial #1

Marvel has unveiled an exclusive preview of this cosmic game-changer:

In an exclusive interview with IGN, Hickman revealed why 2025 marks the perfect moment to reimagine Marvel's cosmic landscape:

"It felt like the right time to revisit this corner of the Marvel Universe," Hickman explained. "Between my availability, Marvel's interest, and the successful model established by the Ultimate line, everything aligned to make Imperial possible. It's come together beautifully - readers are in for an exciting ride."

While comparisons to the Ultimate Universe revival are inevitable, Hickman notes key differences:

"The streamlined approach of focused storytelling without continuity overload works well, but Imperial exists within the main Marvel Universe. We're not replicating the 'real-time' aspect of Ultimate, which brings both advantages and creative constraints."

Though some might draw parallels to 2006's Annihilation event, Hickman emphasizes Imperial's unique approach:

"This isn't an invasion narrative. While both aim to elevate Marvel's cosmic heroes, the stories and execution are completely different. The common thread is making readers care about these characters and their worlds."

The series smartly weaves elements from Hickman's previous Marvel work while charting new territory:

"While I do reference my past stories, Imperial draws more from the broader Marvel cosmic mythology than my specific continuity. There are connections to be sure, but not as many as some might assume."

Notably, Imperial marks the Hulk family's return to cosmic prominence, revisiting Planet Hulk's legacy as the seminal story approaches its 20th anniversary. The series features dual artistic talents - Federico Vicentini and Iban Coello - whose complementary styles bring this sprawling cosmic epic to life.

Imperial #1 launches June 4, 2025.
