You'll first encounter Rompopolo in Chapter 2 during Mission 2-1: Toward Fervent Fields. Upon reaching the Oilwell Basin region, Rompopolo will make its dramatic entrance on your way to Azuz City, requiring you to defeat it to progress. Once you've defeated Rompopolo at least once, its entry will be added to your Large Monster Field Guide. You can then engage it repeatedly either by encountering it in the Oilwell Basin or by starting the "Oilwell Basin Blast" Optional Quest from your Tent.

To prepare effectively for battling Rompopolo, equip water-element weapons, which you can obtain from Uth Duna in the Scarlet Forest. Additionally, gear up with fire-resistant equipment, which you can initially farm from Uth Duna for the belt and greaves, or from Ajarakan later in the chapter. Consider crafting a fire-resistance Talisman like the Fire Charm I or a general Defense Charm I to bolster your defenses. Before engaging Rompopolo, don't forget to cook a meal to boost your health and stamina.
Rompopolo Attacks and Weaknesses

Rompopolo is a unique wyvern with a distinctive set of attacks. Its bipedal form features saggy skin that it uses to inflate with gas, which it then employs in various explosive attacks. Be cautious, as it can also inflict poison; always carry Antidotes and use your Palico to help cleanse ailments. Here are the key attacks to watch out for:
- Arm Swipe – Rompopolo will swipe forward twice with its clawed arms. This attack is easy to dodge due to its limited range.
- Lunge With Arm Swipe – Rompopolo charges forward while performing an arcing swipe with both arms.
- Tail Swing – Rompopolo swings its tail at its target.
- Poison Stream or Swipe – Rompopolo either sprays a stream of poison gas or charges forward while swinging its head and spraying poison.
- Oil Explosion – At a distance, Rompopolo injects gas into oil pools, causing explosions. Dodge these to avoid damage.
- Charged Oil Explosion – Later in the fight, Rompopolo pumps more gas into the oil for a larger explosion. Dodge this to minimize damage.

At the end of your battle with Rompopolo, you have the option to either capture or kill it. To capture Rompopolo, weaken it until your Palico notes it looks "tired." Then, use a Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap to immobilize it, followed by at least one Tranq Bomb to complete the capture. Both methods yield different rewards, with certain items only available through capture or kill. Below are the potential drops you can expect:
