According to the official description, Civilization 7 - VR brings the iconic world of Civilization to life in a groundbreaking way. Players can immerse themselves in the game through a Command Table, which allows them to view the map from various angles, from high above to up close, mimicking a tabletop experience. Engaging with world leaders face-to-face around this Command Table adds a new layer of interaction as you navigate alliances and conflicts through the Ages.
The game supports both immersive virtual reality and mixed reality modes, with the ability to switch seamlessly between them. In virtual reality, players find themselves in a sophisticated museum setting, tailored to their chosen leader. In mixed reality, the Command Table integrates with the player's real-world environment. The Archives within the museum showcase detailed dioramas of your gameplay achievements, accessible in both VR and mixed reality settings. Beyond single-player, Civilization 7 - VR also offers online multiplayer capabilities, allowing up to four players to compete on Meta Quest 3 and 3S devices.
The standard version of Civilization 7 is currently accessible on PC and console for those who opted for advanced access. Feedback from these early players, shared through Steam user reviews, has highlighted several concerns, including issues with the user interface, a lack of diverse map options, and the absence of expected features. In response, Firaxis has committed to enhancing the UI, introducing team-based multiplayer modes for cooperative play, and expanding map variety, among other planned updates.
In an interview with IGN before the release of third-quarter financial results, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the mixed reception of Civilization 7. While acknowledging the negative feedback, Zelnick expressed confidence that the "legacy Civ audience" would grow to appreciate the game further as they continue to play. He described Civilization 7's initial performance as "very encouraging."
