"Ex-Rockstar Dev Advocates GTA 4 Remaster: Praises Niko as Top GTA Protagonist"

A former Rockstar veteran has addressed recent rumors suggesting a GTA 4 re-release on modern consoles, saying the game deserves a remaster.

The GTA 4 rumor originated with a post from Tez2, a well-known figure in the GTA community for leaking Rockstar insider info. Tez2 hinted that a GTA 4 port for current systems might launch this year, and its rumored existence reportedly contributed to Rockstar’s recent takedown of the GTA 5 Liberty City Mod.

Still, it’s important to note that Rockstar has given no indication it intends to re-release GTA 4 — and honestly, such a project would be surprising, considering the studio’s full focus on GTA 6.

Obbe Vermeij, former Rockstar Games technical director who worked at the company from 1995 to 2009, was asked about the GTA 4 rumors on social media. Though he hadn’t heard them, he said GTA 4 — which he helped develop — “should be remastered.”

“It's a great game and there have been a number of successful remasters recently,” he added, possibly alluding to the widely acclaimed The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

“I would like to see it updated,” Vermeij continued in another social media post. “Niko is still the best protagonist in any GTA game I think.”

Regarding how such a remaster might be handled, Vermeij suggested Rockstar could port GTA 4 to the latest version of the Rage engine, which the studio now uses for its titles.

PlayAgain, Rockstar has offered no sign it plans to remaster GTA 4. We must remember the massive scale of GTA 6 — taking on a GTA 4 remaster or remake at the same time could stretch even Rockstar’s vast resources.

Rockstar could task an external studio with the port, as it did with Red Dead Redemption, but a 2025 GTA 4 re-release makes little sense when considering GTA 6’s planned fall 2025 launch. If GTA 6 stays on schedule, Rockstar likely wouldn’t release a GTA 4 remaster alongside it, risking audience attention being pulled away from its flagship title.

Sticking with Liberty City, some GTA fans believe the city might appear in GTA 6 either at launch or as post-launch DLC.

Liberty City is the GTA series’ interpretation of New York City and served as the setting for 2008’s GTA 4 and the 2009 spin-off GTA: Chinatown Wars. GTA 6 is set in the fictional state of Leonida (Florida), which includes Vice City — GTA’s take on Miami.
