Dynasty Warriors: Origins Rises from the Ashes of a Canceled Predecessor
Dynasty Warriors: Origins, launching January 17, 2025, boasts a thrilling hack-and-slash experience set against the backdrop of China's Three Kingdoms era. However, the game's development journey began with a surprising twist: the cancellation of its planned tenth mainline installment.
Omega Force, the game's developer, revealed in an interview with 4Gamer (translated by SiliconEra) that technological advancements spurred this pivotal decision. The team, initially working on a project closely resembling Dynasty Warriors 7 (2011), scrapped it after witnessing the potential of the PlayStation 5 and other contemporary consoles. The decision, while difficult, paved the way for a more strategically focused and modern Dynasty Warriors experience.
The scrapped Dynasty Warriors 10 wasn't entirely lost. Producer Tomohiko Sho highlighted the impact of next-gen console capabilities in shaping the direction of Origins. Producer Masamichi Oba further elaborated, stating that elements from the canceled project, including the free-roaming map concept and a richer Three Kingdoms narrative, found their way into Origins. While abandoning the previous project was challenging, Oba emphasized the successful integration of its best features into the final product. Deluxe Edition players have already experienced the fast-paced combat, while the wider release awaits in January. The result is a game that leverages modern technology to deliver a refined and engaging Dynasty Warriors experience.
