Cujo Reimagined: Stephen King Classic Hits Netflix

Author : Penelope Nov 13,2025

In the latest development for remake enthusiasts — or, for the more hopeful, as another Stephen King film adaptation — a brand new version of Cujo is getting ready to snarl.

As reported by Deadline, Netflix is moving forward with a fresh film take on King’s novel, with Vertigo Entertainment founder and producer Roy Lee attached to produce. However, the project is still in its earliest stages: no writers or directors have been signed yet, and there’s no casting news to speak of.

King’s novel was first published in 1981 and swiftly brought to the screen in 1983 by writers Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner. Directed by Lewis Teague, the resulting cult horror classic focuses on a devoted mother (played by Dee Wallace) who will do anything to protect her young son from a rabid dog. Trapped in a car with a stalled engine, the duo battle for survival as Cujo — once a gentle pet, now turned vicious after a rabid bat bite — prowls outside, while the threat of heatstroke grows.

Cujo is one of many cherished King tales to find success on the big screen, and interest in fresh adaptations has been building lately. Oz Perkins’ interpretation of King’s short story The Monkey debuted in February, and upcoming releases include Glen Powell’s starring role in The Running Man, plus director JT Mollner’s adaptation of The Long Walk — also produced by Lee and Vertigo — later this year. Meanwhile, the IT prequel series Welcome to Derry is in the works at HBO, and Carrie, the iconic Stephen King horror story, is being reimagined as an eight-episode Prime Video series by acclaimed horror creator Mike Flanagan.

Stephen King fans have enjoyed a steady stream of content recently, and there’s even more exciting material on the horizon.
