Andor Showrunner Tony Gilroy Speaks Out on Emmy Snubs for Key Cast Members

The recent Emmy nominations announcement has sparked intense discussions among viewers about which shows and performers deserved recognition. Andor creator Tony Gilroy weighed in, expressing disappointment about several standout performances from his Star Wars series being overlooked.

Gilroy's Praise for Overlooked Performances

"Several remarkable performances from our cast were unfortunately not recognized," Gilroy told Deadline, specifically mentioning Diego Luna and Genevieve O'Reilly's work. "We had at least a dozen performances that genuinely merited consideration."

For the showrunner, these actors' contributions went far beyond individual scenes - they created sustained character arcs that became the emotional foundation of the entire series. Their work, Gilroy believes, will stand the test of time regardless of awards recognition.

"These aren't just great individual moments," Gilroy explained about the overlooked performances. "Our cast delivered profound, multi-dimensional character studies across 24 episodes. The real triumph is that people will still be analyzing and appreciating these performances years from now. I have complete faith in that."

Andor's Emmy Recognition

The critically acclaimed series still managed to secure 14 Emmy nominations this year - the third highest tally ever for a Star Wars television production. Only The Mandalorian's first two seasons (with 24 and 15 nominations respectively) surpassed this achievement.

Luna portrays the titular Rebel intelligence officer Cassian Andor, while O'Reilly reprises her role as political leader Mon Mothma - a character she first brought to life nearly two decades ago in Revenge of the Sith (though her scenes were ultimately cut). The actress has since appeared as Mothma in Rogue One, Ahsoka, and voiced the character in Star Wars Rebels.

Andor premiered on Disney+ in September 2022, with its second and concluding season arriving in late April 2025 after nearly three years in production.
